Braces involve either metal or clear brackets which are cemented to the front of each tooth connected by wires, and sometimes specially place rubber bands, which apply tension and pressure to move your teeth into place. The tension is adjusted periodically, in our office.

Sometimes it is necessary to remove teeth to make room for crowded teeth to be straightened.

Typically, traditional braces are worn from 18 months to two and a half years, and are followed up by a few months of wearing a retainer. A retainer is a removable appliance, which helps ensure your results last.

Dental care and braces

While you are wearing braces you should stay away from foods that contribute to tooth decay or can cause damage to your braces. This includes:

• Chewy sweets like caramel
• Very hard foods such as popcorn kernels and nuts
• Ice cubes

You must give careful attention to dental hygiene including proper brushing and flossing. We will teach you how to floss with your braces.

Braces work fastest and easiest in young mouths that are still growing. We recommend getting started between the age of 10 and 14. However, adults can benefit from braces as well.

No one has to live with crooked teeth. If you are not comfortable with the idea of wearing braces, or if you want the look of straight teeth more quickly, you might consider alternatives such as Invisalign or porcelain veneers.
